The Importance of a Positive Mental Attitude

Have you ever stopped to think about what you’re thinking about? As weird as that sounds it’s really important to pay attention to what we are dwelling on. Too often our thoughts lead us down a path we never intended to be on. That’s why I believe it’s super important to have and keep a positive mental attitude.

In 2005 I was the Intern Coordinator for a local youth group here in Indianapolis. The youth pastor, who was a good friend of mine, would start every day by walking in and announcing…

“Today is going to be a great day!”

Usually, his enthusiasm was met with half asleep interns mumbling some inaudible response back. At first, I thought he did this because of all the fun and exciting things that were happening within the group. I mean how can you not be excited when you work with your friends and your job is to hang out with a bunch of teenagers all day?

Over time it was impressive to watch as his morning ritual never subsided. It didn’t matter if the day before was a complete disaster or if the stress levels were high, each day started the same.

“Today is going to be a great day!”

After a while, I began to realize how much this simple saying was having an effect on me. It caused a shift in my thinking. As soon as the words were uttered I physically felt lighter, happier, and ready to take on the day.

Why was this the case? Well, it was all in my thinking. This simple phrase set in motion my ability to have a positive mental attitude. It took my overwhelmed, unsure mind and shifted it to a positive, I-know-I can-do-this, outcome.

I strongly believe that our thinking has to power to lead us to where we long to be. But it also has the power to lead us to where we don’t want to be. Our success (or failure) is constructed on the foundation of our thinking. I have found this to be true over and over again in my life. My thoughts are the path I choose for each and every day.

So as crazy as it may sounds, say it with me…

“Today is going to be a great day!”

That said, let’s talk about 4 reasons why having a positive mental attitude is so important.

  1. It realigns your priorities. It’s really easy to get lost in your own thoughts. To allow them to begin to take you to places you never knew existed. When we are left to our own devices (thinking) it’s always easier to find the negative lining then it is the positive outcome. This is why keeping a positive mental attitude will help you realign your priorities.
  2. It helps you focus on what’s important. When we allow negative thinking in it takes everything. We begin to feed the lies it tells us and fill in the gaps with more and more negative thinking. Doing this forces us to lose sight of what’s really important. The dreams we have. The truth we live with. Positive thinking will allow us to stay focused on what is really matters.
  3. It connects your head and your heart. All of us are full of dreams and desires that we want to see become a reality. Our hearts are full of the vision we have for our lives, but our thinking gets in the way. Fear and uncertainty begin to tell us it’s impossible and it can be done. Negativity begins to set in and our heart and our head get disconnected. This is why keeping a positive mental attitude is so important.
  4. It keeps others around. I’m sure you can think of someone who is so negative that it’s hard to be around them. This is no way to win friends. Often our negative speaking oozes from our negative thinking. Don’t let yourself become the person no one wants to be around. Change your thinking and change your circumstances. A positive mental attitude keeps others around.

Maybe it’s time to start thinking about what you are thinking about. A positive mental attitude will do more for your confidence, production, and relationships than anything else you can do for yourself. Keep a clear head filled with positive thoughts about you, your situation, and those around you. It’s a simple concept, but one that can really change your life for the better. So again, say it with me…

“Today is going to be a great day!”
