The Simple Prayer That Changed My Perspective

I’ve been paying more attention to my stress level lately. I noticed that most of my days were full of worry and fear. All brought on by obsessing over the thoughts, beliefs, and actions of others. I knew I had to change. But how?

How often have I found myself lying in bed staring at the ceiling. Stressing over external situations that I cannot change.

My desperate attempts to control outcomes did nothing to calm me down. While trying to mentally fix things, my body tensed up and my head began to pound.

Do worries and fears ever stress you out? Are you overwhelmed trying to figure out a solution to life’s problems? You’re not alone.

Recent Revelation

In my stressed-out worry-filled state, something suddenly clicked. A revelation that brought rest to my weary mind. It came in the form of a simple question.

What can I control?

This may sound elementary, but it was a strong conviction for me. For as long as I can remember I’ve allowed worry and fear to run rampant. In desperate attempts to find peace I did whatever I could to control the outcome of situations…in my mind.

My Prayer

But a few weeks ago I came across the Serenity Prayer. It’s attributed to Reinhold Niebuhr, an American theologian from the early 1900s. I’ve found it crucial for me to pray this every day as a way to conquer stress and embrace peace of mind.

Maybe this prayer will help you as it has me.

God grant me the serenity

To accept the things I cannot change;

Courage to change the things I can;

And wisdom to know the difference.

That is the most well known part of the prayer, but the rest of it is just as powerful.

Living one day at a time;

Enjoying one moment at a time;

Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;

Taking, as He did, this sinful world

As it is, not as I would have it;

Trusting that He will make all things right

If I surrender to His Will;

So that I may be reasonably happy in this life

And supremely happy with Him

Forever and ever in the next.

Moving Forward

So what can you do when fear and worry begin to bog you down? When you find yourself trying to control situations you have no power over? Take a minute to offer up the Serenity Prayer. Allow your mind to rest in the fact that the only thing you can control is the one looking back at you in the mirror.
